Some people say they love their work as no two days are the same. And, when it comes to our work, this certainly rings true.

Every day, the Scope Cranes team is thrust into projects of every size , shape, and urgency you could possibly imagine. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Recently, we found ourselves undertaking an incredibly interesting task, one that certainly required our years of knowledge and expertise to deliver.

So, what was the project?

We were requested to transport the tail boom section of a helicopter from the maintenance facility hangar to a spray booth around the other side of the airport. We knew this would not be a small job and that it would take a huge amount of strategising and planning to successfully deliver it. Thankfully, the client we were working with was extremely organised, communicative and approachable from the onset and throughout.

To transport the tail boom section, our client had hired a crane truck to load and unload the massive piece of equipment, given the client did not have access to one themselves. Thanks to our client’s forward thinking, the crane truck was organised well in advance.

What happened next?

The day of the job, the Scope Cranes team arrived onsite and set up the truck beside the tail boom. This in itself was a tricky procedure. Due to its fragile nature, the client had identified a lifting point; and positioned a soft sling ready to go. Once again, we can’t thank the client enough for their organisation.

We often find ourselves in tough situations at work, and this job was no different. Given how complex the operation was, and how delicate we had to be with the tail boom section, it was important the team stayed focused, communicated with each other, and worked slowly. When we lifted the tail boom, the centre of gravity was in front of the lift point; so we balanced it manually for the duration of the loading process.

Thanks to the solid work of our skilled team, the job went off without a hitch, and the client was incredibly happy and grateful with our work. Ensuring our client was not just satisfied, but delighted with the job was extremely important.

Every construction job and every crane truck hire is different; each requires its own unique planning, processes, and solutions. At Scope Cranes, we know this better than most. That’s why whenever we get asked to complete a new job, we like to spend time speaking to our client, understanding their wants, needs, and expectations, choosing the right crane truck , and making sure that, before we begin, we’ve fully briefed our team.

Recently, our client contacted us with a request to remove a 6.2mx3m stone bench saw weighing 6.5t from a shed, and install in another shed at another location an hour’s drive away. Time was critical as he had purchased the saw; and the owner of the shed needed it moved out so that the building could be repurposed.

It was a complex job, with a few unforeseen challenges along the way. We had to reshuffle some jobs around, work against the clock and deal with some unforeseen hurdles. Though, thanks to the hardworking Scope Cranes team, we got the job done, and not just done, we finished the job early with smiling clients, what else could you really want from your crane truck hire?

So, how did we do it?

We allocated one of our larger crane trucks which has the capacity to lift the machine; and a 6.7m long tray for transport. Understanding the time pressures of the job, we moved a couple of non-critical jobs onto other crane trucks to accommodate this. The requirement was that the machine was out by the end of the week; so we completed the job on Thursday. If we know we can push harder, we do exactly that.

Overcoming challenges

Our operator’s first challenge was the height of the shed, and the height of the tray of the crane truck. As it turned out, there was an extremely limited head height for the crane, consequently, the lifting slings had to be shortened considerably to allow enough lift height to land it on the crane truck. The machine had to be lifted and repositioned under the highest point in the shed, and the crane truck then relocated to be able to load the machine.

The second challenge was to do with the length of the machine, which was 500mm longer than we were informed. This meant, our operator had to ensure the machine was the right way around to squeeze it onto his tray. Though, this wasn’t the last challenge of the job.

Our third and final challenge was the delivery, and tight is an understatement. Our operator had to poke it under a roof, on a raised floor with barely enough room for the machine, let alone crane over the top.

Despite these challenges, we got the job done, and had some very satisfied clients. The job was done safely, and in a timely manner. And, our efficient operator kept costs down. Though, most importantly, our client was extremely happy with the results, and in the end, that’s what really matters.

Thanks to our reliability, attention to detail, and ability to get difficult jobs done safely, we were actually recommended to our client by an existing client. 3. Secure edges. Make sure edges are properly secured and feathered with asphalt.

4. Ensure plates are countersunk. Plates need to be countersunk if the road or pathway is uneven.

5. Coat with anti-skid. If the plates aren’t already anti-skid, they should be coated with an anti-skid coating.

6. Paint the edges. The edges of the steel plates should be marked or painted to improve visibility.

7. Use advance warning signs. For example, “Steel Plate Ahead”, or “Bump”.

8. Consistently revaluate. Roadway and trench wall conditions need to be constantly monitored and evaluated throughout the day to make sure it is safe.

9. End of the day inspection. You must inspect the road plates each day before leaving the job.

Hiring a Crane Truck To Assist in the Precarious Recovery of a Fallen Scissor Lift

A scissor lift is an important piece of equipment for any construction site. It allows the tradesman to work at height with ease, and without having to worry about a ladder or a scaffolding tower.

Unfortunately, scissor lifts do not always stay in place and may fall over if they are pushed too hard. This can cause major damage to the machine as well as potentially injure the operator.

There are ways that you can try and prevent this from happening by checking your screws regularly or using wedges under each leg when setting up the machine on uneven surfaces such as gravel or grass so it doesn't topple over easily.

But what do you do if it does happen? In this article you will see how the Scope Cranes team managed to successfully and efficiently recover the scissor lift for a client.

So, what happened?

Our customer called after lunchtime on a Friday to book in for a recovery – a scissor lift had fallen through a walkway. Recovery was urgent due to the nature and location of the situation. If not dealt with quickly, scissor lifts have the potential to cause serious, potentially fatal damage.

We required our longest reach (15m) crane truck , as the estimated radius was 13m, and scissor lift weighed in at 1500 kg. We were able to meet their urgent recovery by proceeding to the location upon completion of a previous job.

After inspecting the job site, the operator realised the margins were very small, meaning he had to park hard up on the compaction bin on one side, and when he slewed the crane over the top of the scissor, he had millimetres to spare on the roof of the building adjacent to the scissor lift.

Evidently, the situation called for professionals with a depth of experience and the right equipment to accomplish this task safely and efficiently.

The walkway – designed for humans not machines – had collapsed under the weight of the scissor lift. We attempted to lift the scissor lift out of its resting place, but it was wedged in there tightly. Our operator proceeded to adjust his rigging to lift the scissor life on the angle it lay, successfully removing it from the walkway without causing further damage to the machine.

This was a dangerous job due to the scissor lift's height and weight. We had to ensure our guys were safe not only from the scissor lift but also from the potential collapse of adjacent structures, especially after they cut parts off trying to free it.

We are routinely called for scissor lift recovery because many scissor lifts are left lying around after worksites close. In our experience, we’ve found scissor lifts are often left where they fall because it's easier than returning them to their place of storage.

However, thanks to our many years in the industry, we managed to avoid knocking down any support structures or scissor lift toppling over. The scissor lift has since been returned to its place of storage and all involved are safe.

Given the need for a specialised nature of the long reach crane truck, we were the preferred supplier for this client.

So, what did the client think?

Our client was extremely pleased with our prompt and professional service. The scissor lift was in a dangerous position, but our long reach crane truck allowed us to make the delicate recovery without any problems.

The Scope Cranes team is used to surprising circumstances popping up while working on our crane truck hire projects. It's just part of the job.

Recently, a client required the delivery and placement of an HSTP – Home Sewage Treatment Plant. We were contracted because of our heavy lift and transport capabilities.

A Home Sewage Treatment Plant is a tank that is installed in a home or building which provides treatment to sewage before it's discharged to the main sewage line. This unit has been chosen as an option for those homes with limited space and those not connected to a city main.

The installation of a HSTP can be tricky due to the increased constraints in comparison to a regular sewage installation. This has meant that in the past it was necessary for site-specific task planning to be done before they could be installed, however, with advancements in machinery and machinery placement this is no longer the case.

Delivering and placing an HSTP is no easy feat, though thanks to Scope Cranes' reputation as a preferred supplier, we had the right tools for the job. And, thanks to our depth of experience and expertise, the service we provided was both punctual and efficient.

So, how did we start?

Well, firstly let's take a step back...

Before we started digging, we needed to ensure all of our utilities were in place. Once this had been checked, council sign-off on all of our proposed excavation work that was needed to ensure the area we were digging did not contain any sewers, water mains or gas mains. After this had been confirmed with council, we were good to go!

To begin this project, a Scope Cranes Engineer called our client to discuss the job. Next up was the placement. To install an HSTP, we needed to ensure there was enough space for our crane truck . We did this by checking the measurements and placing where we could. We also do this with high tension cable so it is not in between or under any of our equipment as this would damage those utilities you don't want damaged!

Next was to start digging out for the pit, which again followed our Engineer's recommendations as well as council requirements.

The place was then carefully excavated to allow just enough depth for us to work in but not so much that it left huge holes around the site, again following all council requirements. Next up, the timing of placement.

Our client explained that they wanted the crane to deliver their HSTP on a day when there would be no disruptions, be it wind, pedestrians, or any surprises. So, it was carefully planned and we were given the go-ahead.

The day before, our engineer visited the site to double-check all measurements, get a good idea of what to expect the following morning, and mark out any obstructions that would need to be moved.

What we didn't anticipate was an unusual spectator – a koala in the tree adjacent. This was a bonus.

With the koala watching our work, the job was completed without a hitch. We picked and placed an HTSP as directed and to an extremely high standard. The client was extremely happy and we're very proud of the Scope Cranes' team's hard effort and dedication getting this job done so well.
